Charlottesville field hockey beats Louisa to open year

Charlottesville’s field hockey team had to wait awhile to open the season, getting around to their opener Tuesday night.

But the Black Knights didn’t waste any time picking up where they left off as 2012 state semfinalists, rolling 6-0 over Louisa County in the season and Jefferson District opener.

Kendall Ballard and Lydia Funk led the way with two goals each, with Ballard tallying an assist as well. Nina Griffin had a goal and an assist. Emily Blow had one goal while Mia Garland dished out an assist.

The Black Knights’ defense and midfield held the Lions without a shot on goal, but Louisa keeper Kelsey Stanley fought valiantly while Skylar Reed put together a strong performance for the Lions.

Charlotteville returns to action against Culpeper on Thursday.
