Buckingham ground game powers Knights past Appomattox

Buckingham’s ground game picked up right where it left off last season on Friday night at Appomattox as the Knights avenged a season opening loss a year ago at the hands of the Raiders with a 20-7 victory.

Even without longtime starter and recent graduate Kenneth Johnson lining up at tailback, the Knights piled up 371 yards at a clip of 8.1 yards per carry against Appomattox. Leon Ragland’s 205 yards and a touchdown on 25 touches led the way while Tariq Gough unleashed a 166-yard, two-touchdown performance on 20 carries in his debut as the Knights’ lead tailback.

Junior Patrick Carr led the Knights on defense, piling up nine tackles, two tackles for a loss and a pair of sacks. Michael Mabry also had a pair of stops in the backfield and added a sack while also forcing a fumble. Geloni Dudley, a senior, had 6.5 tackles and a forced fumble and combined on a sack with Jacob Madden.

The Knights get a week off before playing Amelia on the road September 12.
