Blue Ridge’s TeKanawa commits to Albany

Kody TeKanawa broke out on the Central Virginia lacrosse scene last year as a dominant, hard-nosed defender for Blue Ridge’s revamped squad. Apparently that and a solid round of summer camps caught the eye of at least one big-time college coach.

TeKanawa verbally committed to the University of Albany this week, making good on one of his top goals when he headed south from Canada to Blue Ridge — earn a spot on a Division I roster.

“The sense of community at Albany was very clear to me,” TeKanawa said in a press release. “And I look forward to making it my new home after Blue Ridge.”

The rising senior joins a strong recruiting class that includes Inside Lacrosse’s top-ranked recruit, Lyle Thompson out of Lafayette, New York. He’s the third defender to commit to the Great Danes, a consistent contender in the America East conference. They finished second in the America East standing this year to Stony Brook, who faced off against Virginia in the NCAA tournament’s second round this spring.

Albany’s coach, Scott Marr, was the 2007 national coach of the year.
