Basketball Roundup 12.31.16: Monroe boys, STAB girls, Blue Ridge boys win holiday tournament titles

With the way William Monroe’s boys basketball is clicking right now, things are setting up nicely for 2017 for the Dragons, especially with a two-game sweep of the Fluvanna Christmas Tournament.

Monroe won two straight at the Fluvanna tournament over Bruton 50-37 and 80-47 over Fluvanna County.

Wednesday, William Monroe knocked off Bruton with an impressive defensive effort against a squad that advanced to the Group 2A state quarterfinals last season. On offense, Jalen Anderson exploded for 19 points and pulled down seven rebounds as well. Anthony Terry also put up big numbers, just missing a double double with 14 points and nine boards. Kam’ron McCain scored 12 points.

On Thursday, the Dragons beat Fluvanna, with McCain running the offense efficiently with 13 points and 10 assists. Anderson scored 18 points, Terry notched 17, Malique Shackleford recorded 12, and Charlie Richards had nine points. Terry and guard Jalen McKinney each had six rebounds.

STAB’s girls basketball wins title

St. Anne’s-Belfield’s girls basketball team picked up a 57-48 win over Lake Taylor in the Silver Bracket Championship game of the Boo Williams Christmas tournament in Hampton.

STAB’s Vanessa Woodfolk put up a huge effort defensively for the Saints with eight blocks and three steals against Lake Taylor while also scoring 14 points. Jayla Davis led the way offensively with 18 points and five boards. Bri Tinsley put up a typical night where the senior point guard filled up the stat sheet, posting 12 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Sierra Smith took care of business on the glass as usual with 16 rebounds, four blocks and three steals. Jovia Winkey scored nine points for good measure.

Blue Ridge wraps up Phenom Joe Miller championship

After rising into the Top 25 nationally in the MaxPreps poll earlier in the day behind such luminaries as No. 1-ranked Findlay Prep out of Nevada, Blue Ridge’s boys basketball squad beat Word of God from North Carolina 73-63 to wrap up a tournament championship in Wilmington, North Carolina at the Phenom Joe Miller tournament.

Saddaar Calhoun and Aamir Simms each posted double doubles for the Barons in the title game, with Calhoun going for 25 points and 10 rebounds. Simms scored 18 points and 14 rebounds to go with four blocks. Darius McGhee also put together a strong performance with 12 points and four rebounds.
