Mason Engel’s credentials as a defender are well established. Engel is a rock in the secondary for Goochland. He flipped the script a little on Friday night in a 29-0 win over Bluestone.
Engel was the Bulldogs’ top offensive scoring threat against the Barons, rolling up 120 yards of total offense — 17 receiving, 103 on the ground — and a pair of touchdowns. Engel put the Bulldogs up 7-0 in the first quarter, running in from three yards out. He then hauled in a 17-yard pass for a touchdown from Reid Chenault who split time with regular starter Jordan Jefferson.
From there the Goochland defense took over, holding Bluestone to just 114 yards of offense as a team. Nathan Mattox’s six total tackles, four of them solo, lef the way, but Scotty Pearce and Nathan Adams both had strong days as well. Cephas Harden had the Bulldogs lone sack.
Jefferson had three catches for 65 yards while working in at wide receiver and another 71 yards on the ground. He threw for 29 yards too in a rock solid all-around performance.
The Bulldogs were balanced and prolific on the ground. David Dyer had 55 yards and a touchdown on the ground, averaging 11 yards per touch on his five carries. Conner Saunders had 58 yards and a touchdown and Mattox piled up 55 yards rushing to round out the bulk of a 352-yard performance on the ground.
Goochland is now 3-2 overall, with a 2-0 record in the James River District. The Bulldogs will host Nottoway next Friday night.
