Albemarle softball starts season with win

Albemarle’s softball team starts four freshmen, so the Patriots knew that they were only to be as good as their young crop of players were. If the season opener is any indication, they’re going to be pretty good.

“They played extremely well tonight,” said Patriots coach Bill Hutchinson.

A couple of those freshmen sparked a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Albemarle to a 4-3 victory over Colonial Forge, scoring three runs in the final frame to move to 1-0 on the season.

After a leadoff walk and a base-hit, freshman third baseman Tyler Collier stepped to the plate and knocked in a pair of runs with a single. She then swiped second base and advanced to third, which set the table for her classmate Kaitlyn Kean to connect on a sacrifice flyball that scored Collier and in turn handed the Patriots a win.

Junior Elena Peters, who scored in the fifth inning after cracking a leadoff double, went 2 for 3 on the night for the Patriots. Alexis Steljess pinch hit in that fifth and a timely singe brought Peters home.

Emiy McAllister, a sophomore, handled business in the circle, keeping Colonial Forge off balance most of the night, allowing just six hits and two earned runs while walking just one batter.

“She had good control, very good control,” Hutchinson said.

According to its schedule, Albemarle will head to William Monroe for a tournament this weekend before jumping back into Commonwealth District play against Massaponax next Tuesday.
