Albemarle sends both cross country teams to AAA championship

Allison Huscke is bringing her team with her this time around. The Albemarle sophomore was able to take second place overall at the Northwest Region championship at Panorama Farms, and with help from Elizabeth Sinclair, Olivia Lewis, Lauren Truwit and Summer Shepherd, the Patriots are heading back to the Group AAA championship after a one-year hiatus.

Huscke took second with a time of 19:08 with Stafford’s Hannah Lowery taking first place 63 seconds prior. After getting their first runner across the line, the Patriots had to wait a bit, but sure enough, senior Sinclair took 19th at 19:55, Lewis followed just 11 seconds behind for 21st to give Albemarle three top-25 scores to work with. With the sophomore-senior combination of Truwit and Shepherd taking 40th and 44th respectively, the Patriots slipped past third place finisher Osbourn Park by one point to take runner-up status behind Colonial Forge.

Five AHS boys finish under 30th

For the fourth straight year, but for the first time without any of its famed 2009 4 x 800 runners, the Albemarle boys will take the trip up to the Group AAA championship. The Patriots earned the fourth and final spot as they finished ahead of fifth place Patrick Henry by 27 points.

Junior Ben Deal led Albemarle. His time of 16:19 gave him an eighth place finish. Junior teammate Adam Visokay crossed the finish line nine runners later for 18th. After Visokay, the Patriots finished strong as freshman Ryan Thomas, Chris Springer and Austin McPhillips took 22nd, 26th and 27th respectively to give the Patriots all five of its scoring runners a top-30 showing.

Both the Albemarle girls and boys will head to the Group AAA championship at Great Meadows in The Plains on Saturday November 13.
