Albemarle girls soccer trumps Western

Albemarle High’s girls soccer team lost a couple of key players to graduation, but a lot more key players are back for the Patriots and that experience showed Tuesday night against an inexperienced Western squad.

Albemarle shutout the Warriors 2-0, leaning on a defense led by Joy Piirto, Lauren Brady and Abby Davidson for the victory. Goalie Betsy Haugh needed just a single save to post the shutout.

Brady gave the Patriots a 1-0 advantage going into the intermission with a first half goal off a Maggie Tubridy assist. In the second, Lizzy Marks pushed a second goal past Western off a Piirto free kick.

Albemarle had 14 shots, forcing Western sophomore keeper Emily Maubury to make 10 saves on the night. Western managed just three shots all game.

Albemarle heads across town to take on Monticello Thursday night in another out-of-district matchup.
