With Ease: STAB boys advance to VISAA D1 state title game

It’s hard enough to handle STAB’s trio of Chance Mallory, Carter Lang and John St. Germain. If Austin Williford is going to go for 20, there just aren’t many teams that can answer the Saints’ firepower.

St. Anne’s-Belfield’s boys basketball team made short work of Catholic Friday in the VISAA DI boys basketball semifinals.

Williford led a balanced STAB offense that attacked Catholic from so many different angles with five players getting into double figures. The sophomore went 7-for-7, scored 23 points and dished out four assists against Catholic wile also unleashing a putback dunk in the first quarter that helped set the tone for STAB.

The rest of the offensive attack was also Chance Mallory finished with 16 points, three assists and two rebounds. Carter Lang had 16 points and 12 boards. John St. Germain had 13 points and seven assists and Desmond Roberts scored 13 points. Lang, Williford and Robers each had three blocks.

STAB led 36-31 at the end of the first quarter, but the Saints really pulled away in the second half, rolling past Catholic to finish off a huge win.

Now the Saints get a chance to win the program’s first state title when they square off with state basketball superpower Paul VI Saturday at 5 p.m.
