Albemarle girls soccer falls to Tuscarora

Albemarle’s girls soccer team is used to doing the early pouncing on the opposition, but Monday night, Tuscarora got the jump on the Patriots and despite a Herculean effort from Carmen Thomas down the stretch, Albemarle couldn’t ever equalize, falling 2-1 in the Region 5A North quarterfinals.
“That was a physical game for us, we knew it was going to be that way and we knew we had to match their intensity,” said Albemarle coach Amy Sherrill. “We did and we were able to get our chances, they just got two in and we got one. We just don’t see that intensity night in and night out unfortunately.”
The Patriots, time and time again, have run into tough squads in the regional playoffs that have cut short Albemarle’s tremendous seasons and the Huskies fit the bill this year. Senior Kennedy Jakubek scored Tuscarora’s first goal that game shortly after the opening kickoff, and while Albemarle created chances and controlled possession for stretches, they couldn’t find an equalizer.
Then with 3:40 left to play, the Huskies’ Madison Phaneuf scored Tuscarora’s second goal, giving Tuscarora a huge goal.
Thomas, the Patriots’ senior forward, kicked it into high gear and created a couple of crucial chances, eventually breaking through with 23 seconds to play. Albemarle got one last chance to equalize on the ensuing possession, but a Sunny Gelnovatch shot from way outside the box bounded into the Tuscarora keeper’s hands and time expired.
The loss ends Albemarle’s season while Tuscarora moves on to take on the winner of the Marshall/Stonebridge region quarterfinal.
