Western Albemarle golf wins district championship, CHS’s Burton individual title

With a solid all-around effort, Western Albemarle pieced together a team score of 330 to outpace the Jefferson District field by 27 strokes Wednesday and pick up a Jefferson District golf championship at Lake Monticello.

Charlottesville’s Preston Burton earned the individual district title with a 74, holding off Louisa’s Zane Moore, the runner-up at 79.

Western notched four golfers in the low 80s, with Jack Crombie leading the way at 80, Luke Vance carding an 82 and Sam Stoke and John Bond each putting together rounds of 84.

Burton, just a sophomore, didn’t get beat all year in district play, finishing as the medalist in each dual match while tying just once with Western’s Brian O’Dea. Burton’s the first golfer in Charlottesville’s program history to accomplish that feat.

That 330 beat the Lions, who finished as the runner-up with a 357, with Moore’s 79 combining with an 89 from Perry Hopkins, a 91 from Robert Sisk and a 98 from Evan Straley.

Monticello finished third with Will Owens putting together an 87, Curt Huffman notching a 93, Jack Ebert a 94 and Bailey Bush a 96.

Orange County wasn’t far behind in fourth with a 374. Luke Jarrell had an 85, Scott Clore and Drew Clay each had a 94 and Taylor Jenkins had a 101. Killian Donnelly led fifth place Fluvanna with an 83 and Jared Williams had an 87. Nathan Choi was Albemarle’s low man at 95 while Griffin Walts had a 95 for Charlottesville.

The golf squads now move on to region tournament play.
