Number on the Banner: Albemarle boys hold off Orange to secure JD title

Ben Wesson just caught fire.

The Albemarle junior didn’t start the game on fire, but he certainly finished it that way, burying four fourth quarter 3-pointers to finish with 31 points and help the Patriots pull away from Orange County for an 80-72 senior night win at home.

“It was awesome seeing him hit all those threes, driving – he was getting it all going tonight,” said Albemarle senior Carter Wesson.

With the win, the Patriots secure the Jefferson District regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the JD tournament that starts Friday.

“We’re getting a number up on the banner and it’s good momentum going into the district tournament and regionals after that,” Wesson said.

Ben Wesson hit seven 3-pointers and grabbed five boards to lead an impressive second half for the Patriots. Carter Wesson had 14 points and seven rebounds, Noah Grevious had 12 points and six boards and Christian Humes finished with 11 points, four boards and four assists. Polo Hill came up with seven points and four assists.

Orange County refused to go quietly in the game, with a 30-point fourth quarter of their own to try and offset Ben Wesson’s electric shooting. Braylon Stanley hit a pair of threes and Brody Foran hit one as well in the fourth quarter. But the Hornets couldn’t claw out of a 14-point hole they were in at the end of the third in large part because Ben Wesson didn’t stop connecting.

“I think that’s most points we’ve gotten scored on us all year, but we just had to gut it out and get it done,” Wesson said.

The Patriots will host Charlottesville Friday night in the district semifinals. A win there would vault them into the district championship game. Orange now turns its attention to the Region 4D tournament.
