Deadlock: Charlottesville, Western girls soccer tie 1-1

It may be a tie, but it’s pretty obvious that Charlottesville girls soccer isn’t going to allow Western Albemarle to be the only major factor out of the Jefferson District in Region 3C.

The Black Knights and the reigning state champion Warriors played to a 1-1 tie Thursday night, a critical result for Charlottesville who, when the region tournament starts in June, will likely be looking to battle the Warriors for the single state tournament berth coming out of the region.

The game was tied 0-0 at the break, and then both teams traded second half goals, with Catherine Domecq notching the Western goal while Elizabeth Burns scored for Charlottesville off a Margaret Neale assist.

The Black Knights got a huge performance in goal from freshman keeper Kathryn Lenert who made a series of critical saves to keep the Warriors’ dynamic attackers in check.

By a quirk in the Jefferson District schedule in the condensed season, the Black Knights and Warriors will only lock up once. The next clash could come in that Region 3C tournament in June.
