Charlottesville boys soccer shuts out Fluvanna in region quarters

On Memorial Day Monday night, Charlottesville boys soccer rolled past Fluvanna County 6-0.

The two teams faced off about two weeks prior to the match and ended in a Charlottesville blowout. The Black Knights were hoping for another strong start to kickstart a postseason run.

In the first 15 minutes of the first half, both teams looked about evenly matched and both had some legitimate shots at the goal. After that fifteenth minute though, Charlottesville stepped up and got more aggressive offensively. Fluvanna couldn’t find a counter, especially for Black Knights forward Lucas Simpson.

Simpson scored two quick goals within 10 minutes of each other to give the Black Knights a 2-0 lead. Right before halftime, Henry Coyle scored a goal of his own to put Charlottesville up 3-0 at the break. At that point, Fluvanna seemed to be out of gas, and the goal by Coyle seemed to be the dagger to put away Fluvanna.

Charlottesville kept things rolling after the break. Where one might expect a team to get complacent with the score, Charlottesville never took their foot off of the gas. Senior Lucas Simpson claims that is his team’s mentality for the playoffs.

“We have one mentality for these playoffs, and it’s pretty much ‘the job is not finished’”, said Simpson. “I think that applies to the game, and games to come. In the second half, we were already up by a couple of goals, but we just kind of wanted to keep putting them on the board, and really run them off the field, because it’s not over until the final whistle.”

Even after Charlottesville subbed heavily, they never stopped playing in their aggressive style. Simpson finished with a hat trick, but got help from teammates Henry Coyle, Graham Lenert, and Lucas Miller. Senior Nasir Lindsay also had a pair of excellent assists.

Although the Black Knights’ offense was stellar, their defense shut the Flucos down completely, holding Fluvanna scoreless. Junior goalkeeper Jacob Engel had some brilliant saves that kept the opposition out of the game.

“They (Black Knights) played pretty defensively,” said Charlottesville Head Coach Martin Braun. “We just kept the ball, kept possession, put pressure on their defense, and that allowed us to minimize their chances.”

For Fluvanna, their season comes to an end, ending the career of six seniors, but with All-JD picks Addison Patchett and Will Davis set to return, the future is bright for the Flucos.

Charlottesville will host Spotswood in the Region 3C semifinals with a state tournament berth on the line Wednesday at 7:45 p.m.
