Albemarle sweeps Monticello volleyball in JD opener

Albemarle’s volleyball team has a ton of new faces in key spots, but the Patriots really got things moving Monday night, sweeping Monticello 3-0 to start the fall 2021 Jefferson District slate with a win.

After earning head coach Lance Rogers his 200th career victory at a tournament Saturday, the Patriots beat the Mustangs 25-21, 25-16 and 25-19.

Maya Winterhoff led the way as the Appalachin State commit rang up 19 kills and came up with four blocks. Maddy Ott chipped in nine kills. Newly-minted starting setter C.C. Smith, who took over for the graduated Kiera Roach, finished with 28 assists.

Freshman Grace Sembrowich had three aces in her distric debut and Sophia Bombardieri also chipped in three aces.

Albemarle will square off with rival Western Albemarle Thursday night.
