Albemarle field hockey shuts out Orange County

Albemarle field hockey knows that opposing teams are gunning for the Patriots in the second half of Jefferson District play. That’s why it seemed likely Thursday night that an Orange County squad with recent wins over Western Albemarle and Charlottesville would take Albemarle to the brink.

The Patriots rose up and made sure it was never in doubt, rolling 5-0 over the Hornets.

Sydney Alexander got things going with a goal off a Maggie Lynn assist with six minutes left in the first half. Then Jane Bruns tacked on another to make it 2-0 Albemarle early in the second quarter and Hannah Rogers added another goal for a 3-0 halftime lead.

After a scoreless third, Courtney Huglett and Rogers tacked on a goal each in the fourth. Rogers also assisted on the Bruns goal while Lynn added an assist on Rogers’ second score and Claire Boyer had the helper on Rogers’ first strike.

Orange keeper Katherine Parks faced a barrage of shots from the Patriots all night and managed to make eight saves.

Tuesday, the Hornets will host Louisa County for senior night while Albemarle will look to keep things rolling Monday against the Lions.
