Western girls tennis snags state tourney berth with win over Turner Ashby

Western Albemarle girls tennis beat Turner Ashby 5-0 in the Region 3C semifinals Wednesday, locking up a state tournament berth and a chance to compete for a Region 3C title Thursday at home against Spotswood.

 

“The girls were prepared and ready, and stayed focused throughout,” said Western coach Ellen Markowitz. “TA is a tough team, we had a struggle with them last year so we knew they would give it their best.”

 

Corrine Jennings set the tone for the Warriors at the No. 1 spot, rolling 6-1, 6-0 while Austin Winslow won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2. Ellie Graham won won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 singles while Maddie Farmer and Jenny Little closed the door on the Knights with wins at No. 5 and No. 6. Stephanie Hass led 6-1, 4-3 when her match was called after the Warriors clinched.

Western (17-1) will face the Trailblazers Thursday at 5 p.m. State quarterfinal play starts June 1.
