Fluvanna girls soccer knocks off top-seeded Waynesboro in overtime

Fluvanna County girls soccer knew if they were going to make a run in the postseason as Region 3C’s No. 8 seed, they were going to need to take care of business on the road.

Step one complete.

The Flucos went on the road and beat No. 1-seeded Waynesboro 3-2 in overtime Monday night with Evelyn DeMers breaking through for the game-winner.

“It definitely was a big deal, it felt amazing to be there and to get our team to the semifinals,” DeMers said.

The Flucos got goals from Cristina Valladeres and Maggie McWilliams in regulation to help spark the Flucos to that 2-2 deadlock that forced overtime. The Flucos led 2-1 but the top-seeded Little Giants refused to go quietly and found an equalizer after the break.

“It was definitely very hard and we had to work as hard as we could to keep up,” DeMers said. “It was just really fun to play and it was really worth it.”

The junior delivered in overtime though and kept the Flucos’ season alive. They’ll get another shot to extend the season and also earn a state tournament berth when they go on the road Wednesday night at 6 p.m. to face Charlottesville for the third time this season. The Black Knights won the previous meetings 1-0 and 4-2.
