Fluvanna baseball accelerates past Orange County

With the game tied up heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, Fluvanna County needed to find some way to separate itself from Orange County.

An RBI bunt by Moore turned out to be the spark, with Fluvanna reeling off seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to blow open a battle with the Hornets and win 11-4.

After Mark Moore’s bunt, Orange walked in a run, then committed an error allowing Fluvanna to tack on two more runs to push the lead to 7-4. Mason Gross then singled to right field and drove in Moore and Tristan Chisholm, then John Rittenhouse followed up with an RBI single to score John Glasscock and Gross scored on a passed ball. Suddenly the Flucos were up 11-4 and Orange couldn’t find a counter punch in their last two at bats with Moore throwing three shutout innings to close the game for the Flucos, striking out six while allowing just two hits and no walks in the process.

Gross finished with 2-for-4 on the night with three RBI, a double and three runs scored. Rittenhouse went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. B.B. Cox, Chisholm and Baber each had an RBI. Joe Gomez got the start and threw four innings while striking out six and giving up just two earned runs.

For Orange, Kyle Johnson had a double and knocked in a run. Bryant Childes and Garrick Valdes also had an RBI each while Trey Clatterbuck went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.

The Flucos face a big test Thursday when they host Louisa County while Orange will try and bounce back Tuesday when the Hornets host Monticello.
