Championship Secured: Western baseball beats Orange County to clinch JD title

Western Albemarle’s baseball team took care of business at home Thursday night and, in the process, the Warriors clinched the Jefferson District title.

The Warriors beat Orange County 10-0 with Andrew Barrese allowing just two hits in five innings of work on the mound while striking out five. Barrese allowed just one walk in an efficient outing.

Western’s offense made sure that Barrese had a lead to work with as quickly as possible, with Ben Winslow ripping a two-RBI double to the left field fence to push the Western lead to 3-0 after Aiden Carver-Woodson stole home to make it 1-0. Winslow scored on an RBI groundout by Cooper Nelson to tack on another run and Western operated the rest of the game with a 4-0 lead.

James Meenan pushed the lead to 6-0 in the second with a single to center that scored Brandon Thomas and Michael Holzwarth. Meenan and Barrese each finished 2-for-2 on the night at the plate. The Warriors were disciplined at the plate with just one strikeout as a team and seven different players had hits.

Isaac Sumpter, Thomas and Winslow each had doubles while Nelson notched a triple.

The Warriors (16-2, 12-1) close out the regular season Friday night at 6:30 p.m. against Charlottesville.
