Balance lifts Fluvanna County girls basketball past Orange County

When Fluvanna County girls basketball’s offense has balance, the Flucos instantly becomes a little tougher to beat. When teams can’t lock in on Alana Carter-Johnston, it changes the entire flow.

The Flucos had that balance Friday night and picked up a 60-51 win over Orange County.

Carter-Johnston, as usual, led the Flucos in scoring 19 points, but she had some serious help.

Taty Turner scored 15 points, Abby Seal finished with 12 and Aniah Webb notched another 11. Webb hit three 3-pointers and Carter-Johnston and Seal hit two each. Turner did almost all of her damage from the field, hitting seven shots and just a single free throw.

The Flucos built a 13-10 lead in the first quarter, but really got going in the second quarter where they poured in 21 points and took a 34-22 lead into halftime.

Orange got things headed in the right direction in the third quarter, scoring 19 points led by Riley Harrington with eight of her team-high 14 points in that frame. But the Flucos clamped down in the fourth and held Orange to just nine points in the final frame, snuffing out any hopes of an Orange County comeback.

Laney Fayard finished with 13 for the Hornets.

The Flucos will look to keep things rolling Tuesday when they square off with Albemarle at home while Orange County hosts Western Albemarle the same night.
