Region tournament wrestling is here. Friday and Saturday, a huge crop of local wrestlers will look to punch their ticket for the state tournaments that start February 16.
Many regions, including Class 5, Region D, home to Orange and Albemarle, are going with an all-in format so all wrestlers from those teams are set to enter the region tournament, but Region 3C adopted a qualifying standard for its region, limiting the number of wrestlers in the mix for an eight-wrestler bracket.
The Region 3C match is scheduled for Saturday at Western Albemarle. Orange will host the Region 5D tournament while Powhatan will host the Class 4, Region B tournament that also includes Louisa County while Spotsylvania hosts William Monroe’s Class 3, Region B tournament and Madison heads to the Class 2, Region B championships at Stuarts Draft.
Western Albemarle, Fluvanna County and Monticello’s wrestling teams locked up Wednesday night just three day ahead of the Region 3C championships to determine region qualifiers in a three-team round robin. Here’s a rundown of what wrestlers from those three squads are moving on. The top two wrestlers in each weight class move on, though the No. 3 finishers could still find a spot depending on how weight classes shake out in the tournament.
