Western girls soccer trounces Rustburg in region quarters

Everything went right for Western Albemarle’s girls soccer team coming out of the gate Monday night against Rustburg.

The goals came early and often as the Warriors rolled 10-0 in the Region 3A West quarterfinal, moving within a single win of a state final four berth with Monday’s victory.

The Warriors will host Lord Botetourt Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Region 3A West semifinals.

One reason those goals came early is because Savannah Wilson diced her way through the Red Devils’ defensive formation several times on deep runs before setting up teammates. Wilson finished with three assists on the night.

“We have really fast outside forwards, so it’s pretty easy to take it to them,” Wilson said. “When we get in that rhythm where we just take it down and keep driving, it’s easy to finish.”

Wilson’s ability to attack though is predicated on the Warriors maintaining their spacing on the offensive end, and they did that throughout the barrage of first half goals they unleashed, building a 9-0 lead before halftime.

“They packed it in and we stayed wide,” Wilson said. “We had a lot of space down the flanks and we found the cross pretty easily. We were strong in the air so it’s easy to finish off of that.”

Six of those finishes came from Julia Berg and Caitlin Harvey, who each had hat tricks. Ava Coles, Abby Zimmerman and Elizabeth Fabiano had one goal each while Rustburg also had an own goal.
