Sweep and Advance: Western girls tennis beats Spotswood to win region title

Western Albemarle’s girls tennis team took care of business Thursday, rolling 5-0 past Spotswood to take home the Region 3C championship and earn a home match in the Class 3 state quarterfinals next week.

Corinne Jennings rolled 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles for the Warriors, Austin Winslow swept her way to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No.2, Stephanie Hass won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3, Sarah Inman won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 and Jenny Little won 6-1, 6-1. Sarah Randolph Warren was up 6-0, 5-6 in her match at No. 5 singles but the Warriors clinched before she finished.

Now the Warriors turn their attention to region doubles and singles tournaments before jumping into state quarterfinal play late next week.

“We know the road gets tougher and we are ready,” said Western Albemarle coach Ellen Markowitz. “These opportunities are special and we are grateful to have a group of players who are willing to work hard, harder, hardest – whatever is needed to get the job done.”
