Strong Start: Western baseball crushes Rustburg in region quarters

After Western Albemarle baseball beat Fluvanna to secure the regular season Jefferson District championship, the Warriors stumbled into the postseason, dropping games against Louisa and Albemarle.

That stumble ended Monday night as Western flipped into playoff mode.

The No. 3-seeded Warriors exploded past Rustburg 11-0 in the Region 3C quarterfinals, scoring four runs in the first inning and never looking back in the five-inning, run-rule win.

Jacob Lively and Trevor Vernon had huge nights at the plate to lead the Warriors. Lively went 3-for-3 with three RBI while Vernon went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, scored three times and notched three RBI.

Vernon’s first double got the scoring started and scored James Meenan and Ben Winslow and Lively followed immediately with an RBI single to plate Vernon.

Meenan went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and Michael Holzwarth knocked in two runs. Isaac Sumpter also went 2-for-3 and knocked in a run of his own.

Winslow made sure that offensive explosion stood up with a strong five innings of pitching, striking out six while scattering four hits without issuing a single walk.

The Warriors head to Lynchburg Wednesday for an afternoon clash with Liberty Christian at 4:30 p.m. in the Region 3C semifinals.
