The VHSL’s Class 5 state swim meet is, by its very nature, scorchingly fast. Just blazing fast.

Albemarle’s girls and boys teams were up for the challenge Friday night, producing well enough to earn a pair of top 10 team finishes and a ton of strong individual performances.

The Albemarle boys took sixth overall, led by a monster outing from Walker Davis. Davis posted a pair of All-American times while winning the 100 backstroke with a time of 48.63 and taking second in the 50 free with a personal best time of 20.51.

Davis also swam legs of the 200 medley relay that took fourth place and the 400 free relay that snagged seventh.

Davis wasn’t the only Patriot who posted a huge day as Teddy Cross placed fifth in the 100 free and eighth in the 100 back while also swimming legs on the medley and 400 free relays. Charlie Cross posted a ninth place in the 200 IM and an 11th in the 100 breaststroke. Lucas Smith took 15th in the 100 breaststroke and 13th in the 100 fly. Gustavo Teixeira chipped in with a pair of 16th place finishes in the 100 fly and 100 back.

The Patriots also snagged a 12th place in the 200 free relay.

The Albemarle girls took 10th as a team led by Sophia Yu, who took seventh in the 50 free and 14th in the 100 fly. With Yu setting the pace, the Albemarle relays performed solidly too with a seventh in the 400 free relay, 11th in the 200 medley and 12th in the 200 free relay.

Avery Huang swam well, taking sixth in the 100 breast and 10th in the 200 IM.

Claire Moody had two finals appearances as well, taking ninth in the 100 free and 15th in the 100 back. Maddie Wells took 15th in the 200 free and sixth in the 100 fly. Lara Sikman took 11th in the 100 free.
