Step One: STAB girls basketball beats Covenant in LIS quarterfinals

St. Anne’s-Belfield girls basketball got off to a fast start, jumping out to a 24-3 Friday afternoon in the League of Independent Schools quarterfinals against Covenant en route to a 75-28 victory.

 

The Saints had four players get in double figures, with Sierra Smith’s double double of 15 points and 10 boards leading the way. Bailey Cullen scored 11 points and swiped four steals.

 

STAB came up with 23 steals as a team, including seven by Jovia Winkey alone to fo with her 10 points and four assists. Smith had three steals and a pair of blocks. Vanessa Woodfolk stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals and three blocks.

 

Alex Greer scored 10 points and pulled down six rebounds while going a perfect 5-for-5 from the field. Scottie Hull had nine points and four rebounds.

 

Covenant’s young roster — four freshmen and two sophomores make up most of the seven-man rotation — wraps up their season. Freshman Madison Ammon led the Eagles with 14 points and seven rebounds. Claire Marie Colley scored 11 points while Isabella Harris had eight rebounds.

 

The Saints will now take on St. Catherine’s in the LIS semifinals at home Tuesday night.
