STAB girls’ lacrosse remains undefeated, trounces Bishop O’Connell

Through their first four games this season, St. Anne’s-Belfield girls’ lacrosse had won their games by an average margin of over 12 goals a game, and had outscored their previous two opponents 49-5. Hosting a quality Bishop O’Connell team, it could have been expected that the Saints would lose some of their laser-focus after such lopsided victories.

Unfortunately for Bishop O’Connell, that wasn’t the case.

St. Anne’s-Belfield outscored the visiting Knights 13-2 in the first half and then held their opponent scoreless for the entire second half en route to a dominant 19-2 victory on Friday afternoon.

“We came to play,” said St. Anne’s-Belfield head coach Audrey Schreck. “The ball movement was crucial. We got the ball moving through every attacker.”

St. Anne’s-Belfield blitzed Bishop O’Connell on the offensive end, recording 19 goals from six different goal scorers.

Martha Oakey had five goals and one assist and Addi Foster also tallied five goals on seven shots on goal.

“We worked super hard in the preseason and our hard work is really paying off this season,” said Addi Foster.

Mia Maurer and Lellie King each added three goals for St. Anne’s-Belfield.

“Every single player is a threat at all times,” said Schreck.

For the Saints, beating Bishop O’Connell in such convincing fashion was especially gratifying given the heartbreaking overtime loss they suffered to the Knights two seasons ago.

“Two years ago, we lost to them in overtime,” said Foster. “So it feels really good to get this win.”

After winning two closely contested games against St. Catherine’s and Collegiate to open the season earlier this month, St. Anne’s-Belfield has gotten on a roll in their past three games. The Saints defeated Miller School, 25-1, on April 16th, and then Trinity Episcopal, 24-4, on Tuesday before crushing Bishop O’Connell on Friday.

“We’ve seen some good teams early in the season and we’ve come out with some good wins, but that doesn’t mean anything yet,” Schreck said. “We just have to keep executing. If we connect on offense and defense, I think we’re unstoppable.”

Up next, the Saints have a rematch with St. Catherine’s on April 27th.
