St. Anne’s rolls into state semifinals

It may be St. Anne’s-Belfield sophomore Trent Holden’s first year on varsity, but she’s got no problem handling the pressure of a state quarterfinal game apparently.

“For her to go out there and (play that way) that is very impressive and I know she felt good about it,” said STAB coach Mary Blake. “It’s always nice when one of the younger ones steps up too.”

Holden dished out three assists and scored a goal to help fuel an explosive Saints offense that made short work of Fredericksburg Academy in a 20-2 victory to advance to the state semifinals.

STAB dominated the flow of the game, surrendering just five total shots by the Falcons, who connected on a pair of them, but Cephra Stuart and Catherine Towers combined for three saves in the cage.

Addi Bolin provided the bulk of the scoring with five goals, but Kate McCullough also managed to post a hat trick. Chelsea Staunton, Corinna Coffin and Chelsea Russell each posted two goals.

“I told the kids to keep moving the ball, because we play well when we play as a team instead of one person getting it and taking it down,” Blake said.

The approach worked, as 11 players came up with at least one goal. Marti Fox, Caroline Megargel, Elise Van Arsdale, Katherine Hinerman and Lila Satterfield rounded out the scoring with a goal each.

Staunton and Kathleen Battle had two assists each on the day.

The Saints face Cape Henry, who knocked off Covenant 17-12 Tuesday, in the semifinal matchup at 5:30 on Friday at Episcopal High.
