No Doubt: Albemarle golf rolls to Region 5D title

A year ago, Albemarle was 10 strokes short of a region title.

This year, they made sure that wasn’t the case again.

Albemarle’s golf team rolled to a Region 5D title Tuesday at Roanoke Country Club, outpacing the field by more than 20 strokes.

The Patriots carded a 321 — a 16-stroke improvement over last year’s finish — finishing well ahead of defending champion and this year’s runner up Halifax’s 345. With the victory, the Patriots advance to next week’s state tournament.

Jack Bruns’ 76 lead the way and Bruns fell in a playoff to Harrisonburg star Jane Thompson for medalist honors. Decker McKean stepped up for the Patriots with a 79, followed by Jack Kelly’s 82 and Cooper Ezell’s 84. Robert Brozey’s 84 and Mia Liang’s 88 could’ve counted as the fourth scores and the Patriots still would’ve won the title.

The Patriots’ improvement in region play from a year ago is particularly impressive in the wake of losing one of their most consistent golfers in Ryan Porter, a state qualifier, to graduation.
