A year ago, Culpeper dealt William Monroe girls basketball its first loss of the season in the region championship game, ending an incredible unbeaten run and sending the Dragons on the road for the state quarterfinals.

Friday night, the Dragons got the better of the Blue Devils, pulling away for a 51-32 win to stay undefeated in Northwestern District play.

Martha Apple led the way with 14 points, all of them in the second half, and pulled down eight boards. Bryonna Woofter stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, five steals, five assists and five boards. Hailey Morris finished with 10 points and four rebounds while Iyanna Carey chipped in eight pints. Mara Woolford chipped in four points, three rebounds and three steals.

Monroe’s defense clamped down early, holding Culpeper to just four points in the fourth quarter. Then Apple got going in the third where she scored 11 of her 14 points and the Dragons took control, leading 40-22 heading into the final quarter.

The Dragons will look to keep their run through the district going on the road against Manassas Park Tuesday night.
