Miller girls crush Roanoke Catholic as Woodard reaches 1,000 career points

Miller’s Hannah Woodard got to the block, caught the feed from Olivia Wagner and finished for an easy two off the opening tip in the Mavericks 70-23 blowout win over Roanoke Catholic.

The game stopped, leading to a brief moment of confusion before it became clear that was Woodard’s 1,000th career point.

The Mavericks honored Woodard and then went back to work, blowing past Roanoke Catholic in the Blue Ridge Conference semifinals to earn a spot in the conference title game Saturday.

Miller took an 18-5 lead in the first quarter and extended it to 42-11 by halftime. Naya Hunter had 11 points in the opening half while Woodard chipped in eight. Hunter finished with 15 and Woodard notched 13 on the night.

Wagner, who reached the 1,000-point mark herself earlier this week, had eight points, six of them in the first half.

But it was Presleigh Braxton who did the most damage, scoring 17 points while knocking down five 3-pointers, three of which came in the fourth quarter. Kennedy Johnson also hit a three in that frame.

The No. 1-seeded Mavericks will face No. 2-seeded Carlisle in the championship game at 3:30 Saturday. Miller blew out Carlisle 66-24 at home just a week ago on February 15.
