Maupin honored, Covenant girls blow past St. Gertrude

Covenant senior Emily Maupin was pretty concerned about the task at hand Tuesday afternoon. In need of a big win, the Eagles were squaring off against a formidable opponent in St. Gertrude, ranked No. 8 in VISAA’s Division I.

But still, during a pregame ceremony celebrating how she broke the school’s all-time career scoring record last week, she got caught up. Specifically, she got caught up in the end of the ceremony during a highlight video that ended when her photo flashed on the screen along with past Covenant greats and scoring record holders Ashley Johnson and Phil Bartleski’s photos.

“Watching that video was breathtaking, it kind of got to me,” Maupin said. “I’ve always wanted to leave a legacy here, I’ll definitely remember this day for awhile.”

Maupin’s legacy is secure, and she’s also got that win she was hoping for as the Eagles beat St. Gertrude soundly winning 59-22 thanks in large part to a 12-2 run that opened the game. Maupin poured in 31 points in the win following the ceremony that honored her school record-setting career. Maupin has scored 1,908 points now, outpacing Bartleski’s output of 1,836 points.

Against St. Gertrude, her 31 single-handedly outscored the Gators while Sara Meakem nearly pulled off a similar feat with 19 points bolstered by four 3-pointers and a 5-for-6 outing at the free throw line. The Eagles seem to have turned a corner since struggling against STAB’s pressure last week, getting beaten by Trinity and then beating Waynesboro. Covenant is playing with an intensity and urgency they didn’t have in the early part of the year.

“We had talked about when we play highly-ranked teams, we’ve got to compete,” said Covenant coach Rock Watson. “Then we’ll let the score take care of itself. In the past we would just collapse but we competed all the way through. It surprised us and then it didn’t surprise us as well because I know if we play hard we can compete with anybody.”

On a night that celebrated some Covenant history, it was a historic win too in its own right according to Maupin.

“That’s our first Division I win in four years I’ve been here,” Maupin said. “We’re able to see we can play with those teams and that we deserve to be out there. We were able to come out there with intensity and maintain that throughout the game.”
