Madison softball outpaces Monroe in rivalry win

Madison County softball’s two young pitchers, sophomore Logyn Estes and freshman Emily Seale, don’t get bothered by the spotlight, and there may be no brighter spotlight for the Mountaineers during the regular season than their annual battles with archrival William Monroe.

“It’s always a big rivalry so both teams get pumped up,” said Madison coach Jessie Yowell. “They can pitch under pressure, it doesn’t matter if a couple of people are on base, they still do their thing.”

That tandem did enough Friday night to allow Madison to leave Monroe with an 11-6 victory, holding off the hard-hitting Dragons while their own offense got going in a big way.

It didn’t hurt that one of them also blasted a home run as Seale hit a home and finished with two RBI. Carrington Frazier also had a monster night at the plate with a 3-for-5 performance with three RBI and a double. Hannah Johnson  went 2-for-2 including a double and had two RBI. Meadow Anderson went 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs. Estes helped her own cause too with two RBI. Eight different Mountaineers scored runs.

Monroe’s offense also got going with Alex Ray’s stick leading the way as she went 3-for-4 and knocked in three runs. Jessica Ford also went 3-for-4, scoring twice with two doubles. Jordan Shortridge hit a home run and had 3 RBI. Ray also threw three innings and didn’t allow any earned runs in that stretch.

The Estes/Seale tandem combined to strike out four and allowed five earned runs.
