Madison rumbles past Stonewall Jackson

For the first 11 minutes of play it looked like Stonewall Jackson was going to give Madison County a challenge. But after tying the game just before the end of the first frame, the Generals watched as the Mountaineers threw up 41 unanswered points to win with ease, 48-7, to enter Bull Run District play with a perfect 6-0 record.

Dylan Shifflette scored first on the Mountaineers’ opening drive when the senior caught a 16-yard pass from Dustin Kirby. Just like Madison, Stonewall Jackson was able to score on their first possession, albeit with plenty of help from the Mountaineer defense which was flagged five times on the drive, once for a personal foul and four times for encroachment.

However, that would be all the fight that the Generals could muster.

“After that first drive, we settled down and played attack instead of sit back and try and read,” said Mountaineers coach Stuart Dean.

Not only did the defense bear down for the rest of the game, on Madison’s first play from scrimmage following the Jackson score, Antonio Childress took a Dustin Kirby pass 70 yards to put his team up by seven.

I was waiting for that (play) the whole time,” Childress said. “I wasn’t going to ask for it, but when it’s there, (Kirby) will see it.”

From that point on, it was all Mountaineers. Logan Terrell scored on a 20-yard run and then scored again on a 39-yard pass from Kirby. Just before halftime, Childress made the first of two interceptions on the night and the Mountaineers turned the turnover in points on a 1-yard quarterback keeper from Kirby, giving Madison a 28-point lead.

Kirby went seven for 10 for 178 yards through the air and finished with four touchdowns, three passing and one rushing. The senior was quick to credit those around him for the efficient night, especially since the Generals played with atleast eight in the tackle box for the entire game.

“You know the (offensive) line was great tonight,” Kirby said. “I didn’t hit the ground once. Then the receivers, they ran great routes and had great separation. I just put the ball where it needed to be and they went and got it.”

Childress scored the first of Madison’s two second half touchdowns in the third quarter when he took an interception 75 yards all the way back for six points. Then running back Ralph Yates put a cap on the scoring with a 71-yard run.

The Mountaineers (6-0) will get a bye week before they open up district play with a road game at George Mason on October 23rd at 7:30 p.m.
