It’s not always easy to live up to high expectations like being the No. 1 seed in the VISAA Division II tournament.

But Covenant’s girls lacrosse team made it look easy Tuesday afternoon in a 16-5 romp over Steward in the state quarterfinals.

The Eagles jumped out to an 8-4 lead and kept the pedal mashed to the floor with another eight goals after the break.

Delaney Poindexter led the Eagles’ high-octane offense with five goals and four assists while Kerrigan Poindexter scored four goals and notched an assist. Anna Kate Simpson finished with two goals and two assists and Margaret Ann Graves notched three goals and an assist. Jenna Gilliam and Loreley Kincel rounded out the offense with a goal each.

That explosive, balanced offense is no accident either, it comes down to preparation for the Eagles.

“We’re working as a team and the practice before the game we really went over our plays and made sure we were strong as a unit and that we knew what to do and when to do it,” said Covenant’s Kerrigan Poindexter.

The Eagles are a tightly bonded group and shows game in and game out as they seem to continue to get stronger with every outing.

“I love this team, it has all my favorite people on it,” Poindexter said. “We make a lot of great memories, this is a really fun season.”

Now they’re moving on to the state semifinals where they’ll square off with Virginia Episcopal Thursday, a team they made short work of on Saturday in the Blue Ridge Conference championship game.
