On Tuesday night, Fluvanna volleyball hosted Spotswood in the Region 3C tournament quarterfinals, looking to keep their season alive. Unfortunately for the Flucos, the Blazers found a way to storm back into the match and take it winning 3-2.

For the Flucos, the loss ends their season after posting a record that secured them the fourth seed in the Region 3C tournament.

“It was a great season, of course everyone wants to keep playing but the girls played hard tonight, Spotswood turned it on when they needed to and were able to control the ball at the net and find our holes, and hats off to them,” said Fluvanna coach Christi Harlowe-Garrett.

In the first game, the Flucos came out on fire to take a commanding lead that kept growing throughout the set. The Flucos would eventually take the first set 25-11 thanks to many key performances. Faith Shields delivered one of those, as she ended the night with 40 assists, 18 digs, and a couple of aces. The set also saw plenty of kills from senior Sophia Denby, as she ended the match with a team-high 20 kills.

The Flucos had a similar result in the second set, getting an early lead and never looking back. They eventually took the second set 25-18, with more key performances sparking the Flucos. Senior Khania Brassfield had six kills and four blocks for the match, Makayla Gentry had 13 kills, four blocks, and five aces, while Jillian Davis had 25 digs.

But in the third set, everything took a turn, with neither team being able to create separation. The set went beyond the normal 25-point total, and with two huge Blazer kills, Spotswood took the third set 27-25 to stay alive in the match.

That momentum turned out to be all the Blazers would need, as they never trailed in either of the last two sets.  In the fifth set, the Blazers jumped out to a 5-0 lead before the Flucos clawed their way back to tie it at 11, But in the end, it was too much as two huge kills and an ace were all Spotswood needed to take the set 15-11 and the match.

The loss not only ends the season for the Flucos, but also the careers of four seniors in the program and the Flucos will have to find ways to replace their production.

“Sophia and Khania on the front line, and Stephanie Foster and Emma Russ our DS’s that sub in on the back row, and going into next season we’re going to need to play strong at the net and we’re going to need to be working and learning how to capitalize at the net in a different way,” said Harlowe-Garrett. “We have some young kids coming up, and hopefully they’ll develop in a way that is helpful to our program.”
