Fluvanna sweeps Monroe

When Mandy Kline and Kayla Walker are both on fire, Fluvanna County is tough to beat. Throw in a strong performance from Mia Loyd and opponents are almost always going to be in for a tough night.

Fluvanna’s trio exploded past William Monroe Tuesday night with a 3-0 victory, dominating from the service line and at the net. The Flucos seemed to get stronger as the match progressed, finishing well against the Dragons in game three for a runaway 25-6 victory that started with a 7-0 run.

“William Monroe is such a scrappy team that it makes them really dangerous,” said Fluvanna coach Christi Harlowe-Garrett. “So you try and encourage your kids not to let their guard down. At this point in the season that’s the intensity that you want to see—you want to see them stay focused.”

Fluvanna won the first two games 25-18 and 25-11. A decisive 8-3 run by the Flucos closed out the first game while an 8-2 Fluvanna series closed out the second.

Walker led the way with 10 kills and five aces while Kline knocked down eight kills and four aces. Loyd finished with six kills, a pair of blocks and three aces.

The Flucos also got it done with a new rotation, hastily put in place with standout freshman Hannah Miller out of the lineup.

“We just worked on that today and everybody stepped up,” Harlowe-Garrett said. “They filled the roles that they needed to fill.”

Samantha Toy also played well for the Flucos with seven aces and eight assists.

The Dragons struggled to pass and finish after game one as the Fluvanna attack intensified. Alex Cave managed three kills and an ace, but the Dragons couldn’t seem to get much else done.

“They played us really well, they served us hard and they hit at us well, but they moved well and we didn’t,” said Monroe coach Dee Hoffman. “We couldn’t block well, nothing was on tonight.”

Monroe’s young roster has been up and down at times this season, and they get a chance to bounce back against Orange County Thursday night.

The Flucos host Goochland the same night.
