Finding a groove: Albemarle boys lacrosse drops Stafford to earn region berth

Albemarle’s boys lacrosse team wasn’t sure what their identity was going into this season and the identity they did develop earlier this season got upended last week when they lost a key offensive cog in Sam Mallow.

With Mallow out though, the Patriots have locked in and now they’re bound for the Region 5A South tournament after beating Stafford 11-4 Monday night in the North/West Group semifinals.

Lorenz Brown and Silas Beers powered the offense with four goals each. They got a big lift from the Patriots’ faceoff unit that dominated with 16 faceoff wins to Stafford’s three faceoffs, but it was Albemarle’s 50 to 24 edge in ground balls that tipped the balance in the Patriots’ favor.

David Healy finished with two assists while Connor Warner and Joshua Beidler each had a goal and an assist.

Tim Lindenbaum had a goal and Bobby Salazar had an assist.

Albemarle goalie Ryan Richardson only had to come up with three saves on the night with Stafford managing just seven shots on goal.

Albemarle advances to the conference final Thursday before starting region tournament play.
