Ending a Slide: Charlottesville snaps district drought with win over Fluvanna

Things haven’t gone Charlottesville’s way in a Jefferson District football game since 2018.

That’s a long wait for a district win.

The wait is over.

On a rainy Thursday night, Charlottesville football defeated Fluvanna by a score of 32-27, picking up their second victory of the season while snapping a long district drought.

“A lot of people doubt us, and a lot of people don’t believe in CHS,” said senior running back Eddison Duolo. “We believe in our team, we believe in our in coaches, and our o-line did their thing tonight; we cooked up, and we just went out there and balled.”

The Black Knights had a solid night passing the football with quarterback Caldwell Boyles, but their rushing attack carried them. With a healthy triple punch of Eddison Duolo, Polo Hill, and Moses Kashindi, Charlottesville was rolling on the ground, with that trio combining for over 150 yards.

By mainly running the ball, the Black Knights dominated the Flucos in time of possession, which exhausted the Fluvanna defense. Caldwell Boyles also assisted the offense, completing eight passes for 153 yards.

“We want to run the football,” said Charlottesville head coach Eric Sherry. “That’s obviously something we want to do, but we know we have to mix in the pass to keep people off-balance with our triple option offense. Caldwell certainly made some good audibles, so that helped.”

While Fluvanna’s defense was being overpowered in the trenches, the Flucos offense was on-par. Running backs Chase Paschall and Richard Price combined for over 120 yards on the ground, and quarterback Owen Leydig about 40 yards rushing and 2 rushing touchdowns as well. Leydig also finished the day with 156 yards passing along with 2 passing touchdowns.

The sensational playmaking ability of Owen Leydig kept the Flucos in the game. His ability to scramble kept the Black Knights honest on defense and allowed his offense to open up the playbook.

However, Leydig’s play wasn’t quite good enough, and that’s been the story all year long for the 2-7 Flucos.

“We’ve been trying to take a little piece here and there, something we’ve done well and try to add it, and keep on improving on it for the next game,” said Fluvanna head coach Mike Morris. “The fight that we showed at the end, to not give up and go down the field when we had to…is the biggest thing I was proud of.”

Next week, Fluvanna will face red hot Albemarle, and Charlottesville will lock horns with the Monticello Mustangs.
