Early Assault: Fluvanna baseball puts away Brookville to win Region 3C crown

Fluvanna County baseball had to rally in the Region 3C semifinals to keep moving ahead. They made sure that wasn’t a hurdle they had to clear in the title game Thursday night.

Fluvanna stacked up three runs in the first inning. That got the ball rolling en route to an 8-1 victory over Brookville, netting the Flucos the Region 3C championship and a home game in the Class 3 state quarterfinals Tuesday.

The offense, which finished with 12 hits, came early, starting when Cameron Shields connected on a single to knock in two runs in the bottom of the first to make it 3-0 after Ryan Groome stole home for the game’s opening run. Groome tacked on another run to plate Kyle Aligeri with an RBI in the second inning.

Toby Sherman then broke the game open with a three-RBI double in the bottom of the third to make it 7-0 Fluvanna. Mason Gross knocked in the final run.

That was more than enough offense as starter Andrew Ward struck out five in four innings after his start. Kristian Negron and Wyatt Dansey combined to close out the game, with Negron allowing one run on two hits while Dansey was flawless in the seventh to end it.

The Flucos will take on Abingdon Tuesday in the state quarterfinals at home.
