Covenant slides past Fredericksburg

Covenant’s girls lacrosse team knows what it has in sophomore Taylor Brown, an electric scorer who also lights up the scoreboard in field hockey. But when they get big time performances from players like Olivia Hurt, the Eagles start to get very dangerous.

Hurt had a seven-point performance Tuesday afternoon, scoring four goals while dishing out three assists for Covenant in a 14-7 victory over Fredericksburg Academy in the semifinals of the LIS tournament.

“She has a nose for the goal — she’s one of those players that’s going to go hard until she has nothing left,” said Covenant coach Allie Johnson. “And she certainly makes a difference on the draw.”

Brown registered a single goal, but Covenant built a solid lead early and rested Brown and several other key contributors. Still, the Falcons couldn’t find an answer for Hurt or Charlotte Delany and Kristy Leahong, who had a pair of goals each. Alina Murphy also came up with a goal and two assists while Olivia Gathright had a goal and an assist.

Mary Dittmar, Alex Johnson and Christina Ringstrom had a goal each. Dittmar and Delany tied for the team lead in draw controls.

The Eagles got a monster performance in goal from Kelsey Rund, who came up with 17 saves in the win. Rund, a freshman who also plays keeper in field hockey, anchored the Eagles.

“She had an excellent game — she’s definitely exceeding her performance from the beginning of the season,” Johnson said. “She’s doing much better, I’m really proud of her.”

Covenant moves on the LIS finals on Thursday at 5 p.m. against Steward in Richmond.
