Confirmation: Western Albemarle boys tennis wins Region 3C crown

Western Albemarle’s boys tennis team is back to that time of year where they’re not racing against the clock, but the way they finish makes it seem like they’re up against a stopwatch.

The Warriors wrapped up the Region 3C title Thursday in under an hour, beating Waynesboro 5-0 to clinch the championship and home court advantage in the Class 3 state quarterfinals that start late next week.

“We’re pretty locked in, we’ve been doing pretty well recently,” said Western’s Alex Ix. “We’ve been practicing hard so it has been translating to the matches obviously.”

Western No. 1 Gavin Segraves and Ix at No. 2 rolled 6-0, 6-0 in their matches while Tobin Yates also won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 with Yates thrown into the lineup at five. Simon Rader won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6 singles and Jack Tribble won at No. 3. Jake Selverstone was up at No. 4 but the Warriors put the wraps on the match before he could finish.

The win confirmed what the defending Class 3 state champions essentitally knew already.

“It’s always pretty exciting knowing we’re the best team in the region,” Ix said.

The Warriors will compete in Region 3C singles and doubles next week before jumping back into team competition in the state quarterfinals. Ix and Segraves are obvious favorites in those tournaments.
