Charlottesville girls hold off Covenant in double OT

If it wasn’t clear already how much Covenant’s girls basketball team has improved this season, it is now. Still, Charlottesville’s girls basketball team escaped the Eagles with a 72-70 win in double overtime.

Earlier this season the Black Knights cruised to a 13-point win over Covenant, but this time they needed everything in their tank to knock off the Eagles.

Zanequa Thomas stepped up in a big way for the Black Knights, scoring 23 points to lead the Black Knights. Alajiah Ragland checked in with 19 points and Destinee McDonald finished with 17.

Covenant countered with an all-out assault by Emily Maupin as the Eagles’ senior finished with 46 points and 20 rebounds. Sara Meakem finished with 12 points and crossed the 1,000-career point barrier on a second quarter free throw.

The Black Knights will jump back into Jefferson District play Friday night against Western Albemarle on the road. Covenant gets a break before hosting Virginia Episcopal Thursday.
