Blue Ridge locks down Peninsula defensively to pick up win

Blue Ridge only held a slight advantage over Peninsula Catholic at the half, but the Barons’ usual stifling defense made sure whatever edge they held held up.

Blue Ridge held Peninsula Catholic to just five third quarter points, extending their lead to 10 points heading into the fourth en route to picking up a 53-40 victory to stay unbeaten in a game that was announced late Friday night.

For the Barons (8-0) it was a good sign that their defense was going to be there for them when the explosive, efficient offense they’ve started the year with wasn’t firing on all cylinders. Blue Ridge has made defense the program’s priority and identity and that showed Saturday.

Maliq Brown led all scorers with 13 points and played a huge role in that defensive performance with five blocks to go with his four rebounds. Kobe Jerome chipped in 10 points and four assists while Michael Gray nearly put together a workman-like double double with eight points and nine boards while dishing out three assists. Derrick Jones came up with five points and six rebounds.

While schedules can change quickly, the Barons are currently slated for a short break before playing North Cross on January 4.
