Blanked: Western boys tennis cruises past Cave Spring into state final four

Somehow Western Albemarle got a touch more dominant in the state quarterfinals.

After Rockbridge managed to take one game off of the Warriors in the Region 3C finals, Western ripped off a complete blanking of Cave Spring in Saturday’s state quarterfinals, rolling 6-0, 6-0 in all five matches that clinched the 5-0 victory that puts the Warriors in the state semifinals.

“We’ve got a great team this year and we’re trying as hard as we can to make it efficient,” said Western’s Alex Ix. “Not all matches will be but it was hot in here today so getting off the court as fast as possible would be good.”

The Warriors have turned into a buzzsaw this year, making wins so far a matter of when instead of if, even in an oppressively humid environment in Boar’s Head’s indoor courts. The Warriors just kept rolling, making quick work of the Region 3D runner-up squad from Roanoke. The Warriors’ familiarity with the match’s setting certainly helped aid that efficency.

“Most of us play here over the winter so we’re all used to these courts,” Ix said. “It was a little steamy in here today but we made it work, got good results.”

Ix had one of the 6-0, 6-0 matches with a win at No. 2 singles, beating Dino DiKonomou to pick up his point.

“I played pretty well, but he’s a good player so it’s hard to get into a groove against him,” Ix said.

Western advances to the state semifinals where they’ll face Hidden Valley, who beat Rockbridge 5-0 in one of the other state state quarterfinal matches.
