Balanced Attack: Western volleyball beats Monticello on the road

Nobody on Western Albemarle’s volleyball squad turned in an absolute monster effort Tuesday night in a 3-1 win over Monticello, but nearly everyone in the lineup was rock solid as the Warriors got the Jefferson District season started with a victory over the Mustangs.

Western won 25-7 and 25-14 in game one and two before Monticello fought to extend the match with a 26-24 win in game three. Western then closed out the match with a 25-21 win in game five.

The Warriors’ balanced attack was evident on the front and back lines. Up front, Brooke Chavez finished with 12 kills and two blocks while Katie Carter and Caity Driver each had eight kills. On the back line, Amelia Nichols and Amber Parker each posted 16 digs while Natalie Peck chipped in 11. Parker finished with four aces from the service line. Annabella Pandelli led the setters with 28 assists while Grace Boitott had eight assists. Pandellie also chipped in three aces. Carter led the Warriors with 2.5 blocks.

Monticello, meanwhile, got a big-time effort from Carrie Devine who registered 16 kills and 20 digs. Anne Krehmeyer had 14 digs and eight service points. Adaire Burnsed  finished with four kills, nine digs, three aces and two blocks. Olivia Davis knocked down six kills while Abby Christian had four kills and three blocks.

The Warriors will look to keep things rolling against Staunton High on Thursday night while the Mustangs look to bounce back against another tough Jefferson District foe when they cross town to take on Albemarle, also on Thursday.
