Back to the Final Four: Blue Ridge heads to state semis

Nansemond Suffolk Academy simply didn’t have an answer for Blue Ridge big man Sasha Glushkov Tuesday night.

Glushkov poured in a huge double double with 25 points and 13 rebounds in a 72-41 blowout by the Barons in the VISAA D2 state quarterfinals.

Blue Ridge advances to the state semifinals in Petersburg where they’ll face No. 4 Middleburg Academy.

With Glushkov lighting it up early — he had 17 of his 25 points in the first half — it opened things up for the rest of the Barons’ offense. Michael Gray had 13 points, seven assists and four rebounds while William Lee had 10 points and six assists. Derrick Jones chipped in seven points and six boards while Maliq Brown had six points and five rebounds.

Blue Ridge jumped out to a huge 23-5 advantage in the first quarter, flashing their trademark suffocating defense from the outset. Nansemond Suffolk fared better over the next two quarters, but Blue Ridge shut the door in the fourth with a 20-point frame sparked by three 3-pointers from Kobe Jerome, Lee and Gray.

The Barons face Middleburg at 3:30 at Virginia State University in Petersburg on Friday.
