Atlantic Shores explodes past Covenant

Covenant found a way to meet Atlantic Shores at the point of attack on almost every play, but time and time again, a quick dropped shoulder or a deft spin left the Seahawks’ big, athletic ball carriers with plenty of room to operate on the second level.

For the second week in a row, Covenant’s opponent asserted itself in the run game and Atlantic Shores rolled, 56-14.

Last week the Eagles surrendered more than 100 yards each to two different backs. This time around, Atlantic Shores’ Jaquay Hall ripped off 173 yards on seven carries in the first half, including an 88-yard sprint in the first quarter.

A 64-yard catch and run by Atlantic Shores tight end Will Wentz a few minutes later for a touchdown made matters worse

Offensively the Eagles sputtered as well. They struggled to establish the run and when they turned to the pass, quarterback Lee Coppock often didn’t have more than a split second to operate, even out of shotgun.

Things didn’t start off bad though for Covenant. Atlantic Shores quarterback Quentin Williams and wideout Jordan Segent botched the exchange on the Seahawks’ first play of the game and the ball bounded toward the goal line. Eagles cornerback Jesse Getchell pounced on the loose ball in the endzone and just like that, just minutes into the game, Covenant was up by a touchdown. But not much went right after that, including the struggles against the run and the offense’s inability to move the ball. Hall’s 88-yard scoring play came just a few seconds after Getchell’s tally.

Covenant will try and right the ship next week on the road against Flint Hill at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 11.
