Albemarle High’s girls track and field team took care of business Saturday with a runaway victory in the Conference 16 championship meet.

The Patriots rolled up 173 points to outpace runner-up Patrick Henry-Roanoke’s 114 points.

Albemarle’s boys took second while Orange County’s girls finished fifth and the Hornets’ boys took fourth.

The Albemarle girls’ effort got a big boost from Kaila Ragland’s long jump title and Emma Graham winning the high jump championship. From there the Patriots’ fleet of female distance runners carried the day, with Ryann Helmers winning the 1600 while the next four places in the mile were also Patriots. Madelyn Zarzyski, Rachel Lloyd, Natalie Li and Maddie Henning combined with Helmers for a 1-through-5 sweep for Albemarle. It was a similarly dominant result in the 3200 too, with Zarzyski taking the championship as just a freshman while Kenzie Looyd took third and Emma Weavwe grabbed fourth.

The Patriots’ Kathryn Mayo coasted to a victory in the 400 meters while Halley Dillenbeck won the 80 and Madison Root won the 200. Albemarle’s 4×400 girls squad won by nearly eight seconds to round the day’s event titles for Albemarle.

For the Orange girls, Jasmine Tompkins won the girls shot put.

On the boys side, the Patriots finished second despite not winning a single event title. Albemarle picked up some solid points in the 1600 with Josh Fard, Mark Pellissier and Harris Naseh going 3-4-5 while the squad’s 4×100 squad took third. Chayden Hackett took the runner-up slot in the 400 and Zach Mackenzie took third in the 800. Will Mackenzie scored with a third place run in the 3200 and Naseh grabbed fifth in that event while Nicholas Gardella took sixth. Albemarle’s 4×400 and 4×800 squads each took second place behind Atlee.

For Orange County’s boys, Jamal Carter won the long jump while Deangelo Hunt won the discus with teammate Gage Whited taking second.
